San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker is a feast for the eyes and ears–a traditional take on the beloved classic that nevertheless has a few charming twists: it’s set in San Francisco in 1915 rather than in 19th-century Europe, and Clara is magically transformed in the second act to an adult version of herself, so she can dance the grand pas de deux with the Prince.
The phenomenon that Willam Christensen started in San Francisco in 1944 with America’s first complete Nutcracker has branched in many, many directions, from choreographer Mark Morris’ irreverent The Hard Nut to the Dance-Along Nutcracker to the many, many different school and company productions across the Bay Area (and the country!). In short, Nutcracker has become enough of a cultural phenomenon that a bit of good-natured riffing serves only to burnish its holiday glow.
With that in mind, we invite you to write your own captions for the images below. We’ll then select 15 captions at random, and give away dress circle level tickets to the Thursday December 12, 2019, 7 pm performance of Nutcracker to 15 lucky winners!
