Helgi Tomasson’s 2004 production of Nutcracker moved the setting from 19th-century Europe to 1915 San Francisco. That was the year the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) was held in San Francisco, to celebrate the city’s renewal after the 1906 earthquake and the opening of the Panama Canal. In Tomasson’s Nutcracker, Clara dreams of dancers from the lands that she might have learned about by visiting the international pavilions at the PPIE.
Explore the many facets of vintage San Francisco immortalized each December in San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker.
